Cocaine mummies challenge everything we know about US history

From the Vikings to the Chinese, American history has proven to be much different from what schools taught us growing up. In fact, over the last decade, science contradicted itself almost daily. Recently, various studies and new clues show us that Egyptians had at least some kind of contact with the Americas – the “New World” – as early as 1,000 Before Common Era (BCE), according to Ancient Origins.

How do we know this? A study by a German scientist, Dr. Svetla Balabanova found something truly surprising in “several Egyptian mummies” from the ruling class. This particular study included the infamous Lady Henut Taui; a mummy thought to be at least more than 3,000 years old. The interesting thing about the discovery wasn’t the age of the mummy, but the fact that Dr. Balabanova found nicotine and cocaine in the mummies.

The problem is that neither the tobacco nor the coca plant was available in Egypt at the time Lady Henut Taui was alive. In fact, neither was available until the Victorian age at least, according to the report and only found in the Americas until that point.

History tells us that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. So logic dictates that if this is the case, Egyptian mummies couldn’t possibly have either substance in their bodies. The thing is; however, Egyptians from the ruling class controlled all things – including all forms of trade with outsiders. Until recently, archaeologists and others in the scientific community thought outside Egyptian trade was limited to what they could access via the Nile River. The existence of cocaine mummies seems to prove this theory wrong.

Initially thought to be fake or contaminated, Dr. Balabanova re-ran the tests. One story tells of a Bavarian King testing the mummies. Each time, the tests showed the same thing. The mummies all had a significant concentration of both cocaine and nicotine in their bodies. Enough to show up after thousands of years.

Dr. Balabanova said that after she published her scientific findings on the cocaine mummies, she got a ton of hate mail from every scientific sector from “toxicologist to anthropologist.” Each one reminded her of how impossible the results were.

Countless stories of Egyptians making their way to the Americas exist – including accounts of them being in American Southwest states such as Arizona and New Mexico at least hundreds of years before Columbus “discovered” the Americas.

Caves discovered in 1909 by two explorers, S.A Jordan, and G.E. Kinkaid, who operated under the veil of working for the Smithsonian Museum, contained various artifacts from Egypt. Covered in Hieroglyphics, what the duo named the picture language, the artifacts don’t exist in official Smithsonian records.

A fact that lends itself to an alternate theory: secondary metabolites of tropane, an active ingredient found in Solanaceae plants caused a false positive.

One of these alkaloids, a derivative of ecgonine, mimics the effect of the coca plant – used to make cocaine. This same alkaloid is also found in people who take belladonna, a plant that’s found in the middle east and, namely, Egypt. Is it possible then that instead of the Egyptians having made a near impossible trip across the high seas, that they simply ingested belladonna for its hallucinogenic effects?

Either way, the Smithsonian has a record of hiding things. Scott Wolter, the host of America Unearthed, has for years told the story of the “real” Americas. The pre-Columbian Americas that Vikings and other peoples visited before Columbus. And he’s not the only one.

From the American Stonehenge to the mysterious “medicine wheel” sites across the continent, evidence that pre-Columbian people traveled to the U.S. before 1492 and left their mark is overwhelming. The cocaine mummies are just one more piece of the puzzle that helps prove Egyptians had early contact with the Americas.

Science can’t be wrong. Or can it?
